Having serious startup issues with my older mini (2005), which I'm working on, but in the meantime, I need to eject the OS install DVD that's stuck in the drive so I can try installing it on an external drive and booting the Mini via that.

I've tried holding the mouse during start up, and typing "eject cd" in open firmware, but it says "can't OPEN the EJECT drive." Even the trusty paperclip method is not possible on my mini as far as I can tell.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Imac, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Yeah, you're going to have to open the thing up to get that disc out. It's not that difficult really. You just need a putty knife and a smaller Philips #0 screwdriver. Slide the putty knife down one side (NOT the front) and pry it up, then do that on the other side. If you need to do a little pry work on the front, make sure you do it in the middle, or you may end up damaging something.

Once you have the top cover off, it should be pretty easy to figure out how to get the DVD drive off. You just need to remove the screws on the top so you can take the top cover off the drive and get your disc out. Then you just put it all back together when you're done. Sometimes they like to stick around the edges when putting the top cover of the Mini on, so just kind of hit it with your hand a little until it starts going down.
