MacBook Air currently uses MacOS Sierra... I know I need to update, but it tells me there are no new updates available.

Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and depending on which MacBook Air model you have, click on High Sierra, Catalina, or Big Sur. They're full-version upgrades and won't appear in the Updates list.
