Should I use a disc cleaner such as Malwarebytes for Mac or Total Av before I do a backup? And what is the best program for gleaning out and preventing malware, viruses, etc.?

Malwarebytes is not a Cleaner unless you have Adware / Malware installed. Any other AntiVirus Cra*ware to totally not needed EVER !!

Effective defenses against malware and other threats

Are there any AntiVirus, Disk Cleaner, Optimizers, Defrag, VPNs etc installed which should be removed as per Developers Instructions. They are useless, unneeded, cause havoc and interfere with the normal operation of the OS and can Corrupt the OS to the point of having to reinstall the OS
