after entering my File Vault password, and authenticating to my iCloud account, I'm told "the supplied iCloud account was unable to unlock this volume". How do I unlock??

FIXED IT!! On the initial sign-on screen, there is a directional arrow next to the password box, allowing the system to accept my file vault password. [Recovery mode would not accept the file vault pwd.]

Hello CAGEY66,

Thanks for reaching out in Apple Support Communities! We understand your having trouble to log into your Mac, and we're happy to help you with this.

If you previously used a different Apple ID account or someone else set up FileVault for you, try using that Apple ID to sign in. This could be the cause of the error you're receiving. What steps were performed on the iMac prior to this error occurring? Did you perform any updates? Let's reboot the iMac and try logging into safe mode to see if the same error occurs: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

Regards.
