Audio input for MacOS, for recording

I have two macs at home: a Mac Pro Cylinder and Macbook Pro 16". My cylinder does not reflect any input audio in the Preferences. There's nothing on the Macbook.

I want to record some old cassette tapes into audio.

What are folks using to accomplish this? I'm going to assume that it's USB(a|b|c) based or a digital product.

Before asking, I searched online and found scores of similar concerns that were slightly older, but with no real resolution.

I don't want to have to buy expensive docks or processing hardware for what should otherwise be a simple compute task.

I used a cheap no-name USB-3.5mm TRS adapter when last I needed analog capture, but that's been a while.

Check over in the Audacity forums for any hardware recommendations that might have over there.

You've mentioned. TRS can do stereo, depending on the setup. Check with Audacity for any recommendations they might have for stereo capture, as that's the sort of thing the folks over there are really into...
