24 character recovery key???

The recovery key I generated through my iphone was 28 characters long. My macbook air can only take 24 characters, and I cannot delete the dashes when I type it in. What do I have to do to generate a 24 character code??? I'm locked out of my macbook air and it is also locked. The locked screen that comes up also won't accept the 28 character code with or without the dashes.

I'm not sure what "recovery key" you are referring to here. Prior to Apple using Two-Factor Authentication security with the Apple ID, they used Two-Step Verification (2SV) that relied on a 14-character recovery key should you get locked out of your Apple ID. In turn, if you attempt to use your Apple ID on a "non-trusted" device, 2SV would send a 4-digit code to a trusted device that you would need to enter on the non-trusted one.
