You want to make sure to do a secure erase using Disk Utility so Disk Utility writes a single pass of zeros over the whole drive so your data is destroyed. Unfortunately Apple's instructions assume users have an SSD or are using Filevault.

You can find a CD of macOS 10.6.8 High Sierra on eBay, or Amazon. Use that CD to perform the format and install.

Actually, OS 10.6.x is Snow leopard and the only ones that will work are the white 10.6.3 full install incl. update DVDs such as this offer here:

They want $99 for it plus shipping - which is ridiculous.

10.6.8 was an update and cannot be used as an install DVD as it lacks part of the OS being just an update.

As well, at that time, you needed to be sure to get a full installer compatible with your exact OS build: a 10.6.3 installer could not be used on a machine that came with 10.6.4.

Why would I go there? I actually have two original 10.6 plus two 10.6.3 DVDs although I no longer have a machine that'll boot with Snow Leopard. Additionally, I would never buy anything like that at Goodwill.

But, that is neither here nor there: I am not the one needing one.

Then go to Goodwill, and see if you can find some for free, like I did.
