Verification code not working (and sidecar problems)

I began this trying to get sidecar working for the first time. (didn't work, connect always gives "timed out" error message.) After restarts of both ipad and macbook pro, the next suggestion was sign out and log back into apple ID. Worked fine on macbook pro, but Ipad is stuck on the id verification code. The code pops up on my macbook, I enter it on the ipad, and nothing happens forever. No timeout, just nothing happens forever. If I hit return, it cancels.

so, how do I get apple verification code working and then sidecar?

OK, turns out this doesn't work with an external keyboard. So, macOS bug there.

Now, I'm getting a new error on the macbook not allowing sidecar: "Sidecar can’t connect wirelessly because your iPad’s Wi‑Fi is not available. To use Sidecar wirelessly, turn on Wi‑Fi and make sure it is not in use for Personal Hotspot."

Wi-Fi is certainly on on the ipad. Makes no sense.

Worked on third try. What a nightmare this has been.
