AirPort Extreme A1143 over 100mbps transfer / download

Hi. Is it possible to get download speeds over 100mbps for internal network transfer or even internet downloads in an AirPort Extreme 100mbps? My internet connection is 250mbps (measured in other devices) and the AirPort Extreme is connected to my network by means of a CAT5 cable with measure speed of over 500mbps.

How should I do it?

If your speeds are limited to 100 Mbps, then you have the 1st Generation version. If you did have a 2nd Gen version, you would see much higher speeds.

It's unfortunate that Apple chose to use the same model number for two different products that were similar in appearance. The 1st Gen used only 100 Mbps Ethernet ports. The 2nd Gen used Gigabit Ethernet ports.

AirPort Utility will tell you what version that you have.

Open AirPort Utility

Hold down the option key while you double-click on the AirPort Extreme

The version will appear near the top of the next window

To add a bit to Bob's comments:

  • There were two generations (1st & 2nd) of the 802.11n AirPort Extreme base station. Both have the same model number and look identical, which makes it a bit confusing.
  • The 1st gen model, has Order# MA073LL/A; the 2nd gen's is: MB053LL/A
  • As Bob has mentioned, the 1st gen is limited to 100 Mbps Ethernet ports on both the WAN & LAN sides. However, the 2nd gen model sports 1 Gbps ports on both sides.

Other than what Bob has provided you, the only means to know for sure would be to access the base station via SSH (not as simple as it sounds, as SSH is not enabled by default on these base stations). You would then use AirPort Command Interpreter (ACP) to access the syAP property. The 1st gen, also know as: AirPort Extreme with 802.11n (Fast Ethernet), would have an syAP value of: 104; whereas the 2nd gen would be 105.

I think the fact that you are seeing speeds capped at 100 Mbps, pretty much tells you without going through this trouble.

As I said, you are very lucky.

I've had at least 4 Apple routers over the years, and none of them ever lasted more than 5 years or so. The last one failed before it reached its second year.

Easy to understand why Apple abandoned the WiFi router business 3 years ago. If you call them to ask them about your A1143, they will tell you it is obsolete, and will refuse to offer any help or service......even if you are willing to pay them.

As far as laptops.....mine.....which is a little over a year old......is in for service for the 3rd time.
