You might be tapping to low on the keyboard. Try tapping a little higher up.

Have you tried restarting your phone or force restarting the phone? I don’t know which model of phone that you have, but these are the three ways to force restart an iPhone depending in the model.

• iPhone 8 or later: Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Then press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo.
• iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, and iPod touch (7th generation): Press and hold both the Top (or Side) button and the Volume Down buttons until you see the Apple logo.
• iPad with Home button, iPhone 6s or earlier, and iPod touch (6th generation) or earlier: Press and hold both the Home and the Top (or Side) buttons until you see the Apple logo.

When you delete the emoji keyboard, what happens when you tap the 1,2,3 key? Also which model iPhone do you have? If you have an iPhone 10 or newer, try turning the phone in landscape mode and try tapping on the 1,2,3 key. For that matter, try it no matter which phone you have, if you can type in landscape mode.
