Folder on desktop is gone

OMG this folder contains information from 3 years of research. About the same time that this disappeared I had clicked on a "shared" desktop with a cryptic name which I didn't create; it's listed under DEVICES.

Clicking on it seems to have caused it to disappear. I still have another one under shared, also with cryptic name which I didn't create (why are they here anyway)

Check the System/Apple ID/iCloud preference pane and see if the iCloud Drive is activated? If it is check the Options window and see if Desktop & Documents Folder is checked.

Also you can restore that folder to the Desktop from your Time Machine backup made just prior to it going missing. You do have a backup strategy, right?
