Hi there,
You can upgrade to OS X El Capitan. Get it here: How to get old versions of macOS - Apple Support. Backup before upgrading!

Did the error give an explanation? Not enough storage? Not enough memory?
Also which version of MacOS do you currently have installed and have you ever upgraded your hardware? 2GB of RAM might be the official minimum, but 4GB RAM is the practical minimum for 10.11 to run.
I am replacing the old hard drive (it died) with a new SSD drive. I have 4GB RAM installed. New SSD is same size as old drive. Following all directions from HELP sections. Just seems to be a glitch every time. Hoping to get the old iMac back on the desk.
Tried to install El Capitan and got so far and told me it couldn't happen!
Out of curiosity: why are you spending money on an SSD on a 14 year old computer with outdated old hardware? And only 4 GB RAM? The SSD may not be compatible with your model.
