I was down loading Big Sur and suddenly computer turned off, when I restarted it a lock sign came on asking for a password!! not only that but the screen froze and totally irresponsible .

Restarat using command-R to get to recovery. Then go to disk utilities and select your drive and use repair disc and see if that will resolve. If not then use reinstall OS. It should not impact your files or apps.. Do you have a TM backup just in case?

That means cannot find any OS but command-r should work to get to recovery. What Mac do you have? You stated solved above, did you fix the issue?
When I started computer with command + r frozen screen came on with flashing lock sign asking password. However frozen screen would not let me log in.
Then flashing question came up
Now key board is not responding
iMac screen is freeze after trying to download Big Sur
