Duplication of all messages sent from the iPad Mail App with Hotmail

Since deleting and then re-adding my Hotmail Account on the Mail App on my iPad Pro (to overcome another problem this Mail App was giving me), I now get duplicate copies of any mail Sent (The recipient does, thankfully, only receives one copy of this sent email) from this App. I do not have this problem with any other Apps accessing Hotmail (e.g. the Outlook App on the iPad, or Outlook 365 on the PC). How can I fix this annoying feature in the Apple Mail App, please?

Here's some further detail:

Apple suggested settings (from https://support.apple.com/mail) for Hotmail are applied:

Incoming Mail Server:

Account Type: IMAP

Username: myname@hotmail.com

Server port: 993

Authentication: Password

SSL/TLS: Yes

Server Hostname: imap-mail.outlook.com

Outgoing Mail Server:

Account Type: SMTP

Username: myname@hotmail.com

Server port: 587

SSL/TLS: Yes

Server Hostname:

smtp-mail.outlook.com)

I am not the first to suffer this double-send problem - Many others have. I have searched for solutions

but have not found one that works, e.g.

From my iPad Mail App:

If Mail>Accounts>Steve Hotmail>Advanced> Sent is set to ‘On Server, Sent Folder’ -

My iPad Mail 'Sent' folder shows any single ‘Send’ of an email from iPad Mail-Hotmail incorrectly as TWO sends. This is reflected in the Hotmail server and all other PCs across my Hotmail account, 2 copies – The recipient does, thankfully, only receives one copy of this sent email. (All other Sent emails are correctly shown in the Mail App's Sent folder with this configuration.). Not good!

If Mail>Accounts>Steve Hotmail>Advanced> Sent is set to ‘on my iPad, Sent Folder’ -

My iPad Mail Sent folder correctly shows each new single ‘Send’ of an email from iPad Mail-Hotmail BUT incorrectly the iPad Mail Hotmail Sent folder ONLY shows this sent-from-iPad email (i.e. no

other Sent Hotmail emails previously sent (and still on the Hotmail server's Sent folder) NOR any new Sent Hotmail emails sent from other devices). No previous emails sent via other devices are available in the iPad Mail App Hotmail Sent folder with this setting. Not good!

On all other devices (e.g. PCs running Microsoft Outlook), and on the Outlook App on my iPad:

Send for Hotmail works correctly, still: i.e. a single send appears on all other devices as a single ‘send’ and all previously sent Hotmail emails are correctly available under the Hotmail ‘Sent’ folder.

How do I stop this 'double send' from my iPad's Mail App + Hotmail, please?

OK, before I took your next recommended step (to contact Apple Support), I tried one more time to fix the duplication of any emails sent from the Apple Mail App on my iPadPro for my Hotmail account:

The fix, and it does seem to be a fix, appears to be to add the Hotmail mail account via the Outlook.com option but only AFTER any old Hotmail account (added under Settings>Mail>Add Account>'others' and using all Apple best-advised settings which gave this sent-emails-duplication problem) have been deleted from the iPad -

With my Mail App Hotmail account now added via the 'Outlook.com' option (under Settings>Mail>Add Account) single email sends now show correctly as single sends.

(Note: However, once you are running the Mail App again with your Hotmail account added via the Outlook.com option, to re-load all that Hotmail account's folders' information back into the Mail App's Hotmail account isn't as easy as I would have hoped: There appears to be a limit on volume downloads from the Hotmail mail server with this App and Hotmail and, therefore, after a few Hotmail folders have re-populated on the Mail App the message “Cannot Get Mail, The connection to the server failed” may appear, depending on how many old emails that you keep. You need to either initially limit the 'Mail days to sync' from ‘no limit’ to, say, '1 month' ( to at least get some folder content back quickly) and/or leave it for a while after each time you get this message…. With time it does seem to self-clear, and allow you another bite at re-populating more of the Mail Hotmail folders ... and repeat!

With time you can set the store to have no limit on downloaded emails again, if that is your preference. To re-populate each folder to download the Mail App's Hotmail account folders’ contents afresh you seem to need to open each folder in turn on the Mail App.

This re-population of contents can, therefore, take some time! I'm currently doing this with my fingers crossed that, when all is downloaded back into the App, this will fix all problems on my iPad's Mail App + Hotmail Account)!

Case solved, probably!

Hi FlyingSoftSteve,

To make sure we're on the same page, we see when sending mail or reply to threads in your Hotmail account on your iPad Pro, the Sent folder shows two copies of your responses, is that correct?

If so, can you confirm if your iPad Pro is fully updated?

If not, take a moment to update and then test the issue again.

If your iPad is already fully updated or if the issue persists after updating, we'd recommend reaching out to Apple support for additional assistance.

Cheers!

Hi,

Yes, when sending mail or replying to emails in my Hotmail account on my iPad Pro, the Sent folder shows two copies of my responses: This incorrect duplication is also then shown on the Hotmail server.

No other method/App that I use to Send emails with my Hotmail account (e.g. Outlook 365 on PC, or the Outlook App on my iPad Pro) incorrectly creates two copies of a Sent email from a single email send. It is only my iPad Pro's Mail App with this fault.

I keep my iPad Pro up to date - It is therefore currently running iOS 14.4.2.

I was hoping that the community might provide a solution to this (quicker than the Apple Support approach).
