The only grey bar that should appear is the “dock”, the place to put your 4 most-used apps. If you can provide a screen shot it would be helpful.

Hi there MargieLynch,
Thanks for joining us in Apple Support Communities! We understand you're seeing a gray bar at the bottom of the screen of your iPhone. We're glad you're here, and we'd like to learn more to see how we can help.
Let's begin by restarting your iPhone, if you haven't already. If needed, learn how to restart here:
If that doesn't seem to help, does the gray bar contain any apps? If so, it's most likely the Dock that you're seeing. Have a look at this link to learn more:
Move and organize apps on iPhone
If it's not the Dock you're referring to, does it appear to be the AssistiveTouch menu? This link provides more information about AssistiveTouch, and how to turn it off:
Use AssistiveTouch on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
If the issue persists, please provide more details about how the gray bar appears on the screen of your iPhone, and we'll take a closer look from there.
Cheers.
