New Mac Book Pro will not open docx files

Those are Microsoft Word files. Microsoft Word is a component of Microsoft Office. If you brought over Word from an older Mac, and it predates 2018, it may not be a compatible version with Catalina or Big Sur.

The 2019 version of Microsoft Office is compatible.

Another option to try is to launch Pages and then Use the open menu item and select document you wish to open. Pages can open word documents. If this doesn't work let us know so we can offer some other options.

Actually, several different applications have the ability to open docx and doc files. I know for a fact that Apple Pages has the ability to open Docx files since I use it to open up my lecture notes. OpenOffice and LibreOffice usually work at opening docx as well

LibreOffice should work, if it is the most current release. Mind you some formatting may be lost.

I've used Pages to open Docx files in the past with very little issues. If you're sticking to open source applications, I would recommend try OpenOffice as well.
