What model and how old is the computer?
If it is old enough and depending on the manufacturer
they may have dropped driver support for it not only
on the M1 but Big Sur in general.
Printer companies have increasingly been dropping support
sooner and sooner as they don't make money supporting
old printers.

I did buy an adapter for the printer cable to my new MacBook air.
The new laptop does communicate with the printer. ( I turned off the printer and my laptop and the appropriate message came up. When I powered the printer back up, the communication worked, the printing icon disappeared as it should.
no printing occurred and no jobs were left on the printer cue.
Maybe driver issue, not sure. I'm not that smart though.
