Apple Pencil lid/cap

I have an Apple Pencil that I got in 2018 and I just lost part of the lid/cap thing. It was the silver ring around the part that connects to the Apple Pencil itself that is detachable/it just falls out sometimes. I just want to know what purpose does that silver ring thing have like is it a magnet or something else and is it very important?

The cap provides protection for the Lightning connector while the Pencil is not being charged. The metal ring is largely cosmetic.
