I am the original owner. I haven't had this problem before since I did not need to worry about logging in and out of the iPad. Like an idiot I did not write down my password and username. The iPad does not like what I have been using and trying.

The method detailed in the page linked to above requires you to know the ID and password.Go to https://iforgot.apple.com to retrieve the ID and reset the password. See also If you forgot your Apple ID - Apple Support

Failing that, as long as you are the original owner and can produce a proof of purchase (which must include the serial, IMEI or MEID number) you can request unlocking as detailed here: Activation Lock - Support. Note that the process will completely erase the device.

These are your only options. there is no easy method of turning it off - it there were there would be no point in having it in the first place. The object is to make a stolen phone permanently useless.
