I cannot update my iMac from OS High Sierra to OS Catalina and I do not know why?

I have attempted to update my MAC from OS High Sierra to OS Catalina and it will not update until I update to a later version of High Sierra version 10.15?

I am NOT technical and I just want to update the operating system.

What iMac sub-model? That is very important because older iMacs cannot run the latest operating systems.

You find your sub-model from "About this Mac.." under your Apple menu:

Your iMac must be a 2012 or late model to run Catalina.
