these buttons on the bottom left and right of the screens don’t work. I have tried restarting, holding the buttons down firmly, etc. they are not responsive.

Hold your finger on the button for 1-2 seconds. Don’t press, just touch it.
Then most likely your phone is broken. Use the Get Support link at the top of this page to discuss repair options.
Hm it looks like it works only when I turn off 3D Touch. Is that expected?
Probably, as 3D touch has been retired completely, and is no longer available in iOS 14 (which you should really update to).
