If your MacBook Air lacks a USB-C connection and only has the older USB Type-A ports - you will simply require a USB-C to USB Type-A cable:

Unfortunately, the function that I know which utilizes both iPad and Mac doesn't work for your Mac, since it is a bit old. It is SideCar, which uses your iPad as an external monitor, but it requires a MacBook Air from 2018 or later. Other than that, I am not sure if there is any way to utilize using Mac and iPad together.
I mean, you can connect your iPad to your Mac via Bluetooth to use Cellular network, but that is only applicable if you have an iPad with cellular connectivity.
Anyways, I'll go check if there is any other way for Mac to work with iPad.
Best,
Stanley
