Why does the ipad mini gen5 charge at 19w, but the ipad gen8 only charges at 10w?

MichelPM, You’re probably correct. I only copied the lists from the two sources without documentation. My new iPad 8 does not FC despite it including a Lightning to USB C cable and 20W USB C charger. BTW, where do you get your information that’s very specific about FC in iPads? I almost couldn't find it anywhere. Did you work for Apple? Thanks,

Dr. J

Not sure as an iPad Mini 5 is NOT a fast charge device, either.

So your iPad Mini 5th gen should NOT be able to charge using the full 18W or 20W of power.

All base/budget model iPads DO NOT fast charge, at all.

Your 8th gen iPad should have come with an 18W or 20W power/charging/adapter.

With the 18W or 20W adapter, your iPad 8th gen should be charging using a full 12W of charging power.

If you are using any iOS/iPadOS device while it is charging, the charge power level will be less and may vary widely while using and charging the device at the same time.

Lol_apple,

I agree strongly. I have a new iPhone 11 and iPad 8. Nowhere in either User Manual online does it state anything about fast charging, and I only found one Apple document that says it works for iPhone 8 and later. After over an hour with an Apple Chat agent just now, they finally agreed that the only source they had about iPad FC’ing is an internal Apple document nowhere available to the public. The agent stated from the internal document that:

The following models have the fast charging functionality:

• iPad Pro 12.9 inches (2015 or newer)

• iPad Pro 10.5 inches (2017)

• iPad Pro 11 inches (2018 and 2020)

• iPad Mini (2019)

• iPad Air (2019)

Another January 2021 article on a Netherlands website I got from an Apple-themed Discussion List says the same:

Fast charging

With a fast charger, you charge your Apple iPad faster than with a regular charger. The following models have the fast charging functionality:

  • iPad Pro 12.9 inches (2015 or newer)
  • iPad Pro 10.5 inches (2017)
  • iPad Pro 11 inches (2018 and 2020)
  • iPad Mini (2019)
  • iPad Air (2019)

The Apple iPad Pro 2018 and 2020 have a fast charger included by default. You have to purchase it separately for the other models. To use fast charging, you need a USB-C to Lightning cable and a power adapter of at least 18 watts.

I made a similar assumption to you because my iPad 8 also came with both the correct cable and a 20W USB C charger.

I have one small request of you. Can you give me the Brand and model number for the LED meter you show in your original question? I’d like to have a unit like that for Apple devices and other things.

Many thanks,

Dr. Johnson

I far as I am aware the 2019 iPad Mini 5th gen DOES NOT support fast charging, but it is still compatible with ANY Apple power/charging adapter block.

The iPad Mini will only use the power it can negotiate regardless whatever higher wattage Apple power/charging adapter is used.

Same thing applies to all base model iPads such a the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th generations.

I have not found anything “officially” posted from Apple that states that fast/quick charging is supported on the 2019 iPad Mini 5th gen.

ONLY iPad Pro models and the 2019 and 2020 iPad Air models support fast charging via a 18W or 20W adapter.

Other than 1st gen Apple Pencil support, nothing else has changed about the 2019 iPad Mini 5th gen.

Apple Website somewhere, I no longer no where the Apple Website links are and I no longer have the link addresses saved, that states which iPad models support the fast charge/QuickCharge ( QC ) charging protocol.

I believe it is stated on each iPad/iPhone model page in small, gray footnotes sized text, at the bottom of each model Webpage, whether an iPad or iPhone model supports the QuickCharge protocol.

I know all of my iPad Pros and my new iPhone SE 2 support the QuickCharge ( QC ) fast charging protocol

iPad MIni 5 was never mentioned/included as one of the models that support the QuickCharge ( QC ) fast charging protocol.
