Display brightness auto-adjusts even though I have the checkbox un-ticked

Hello everyone,

My macbook display continually adjusts its brightness even though I've un-checked the tick box in System Preferences. How can I stop this happening?? This is on an M1 macbook pro running Big Sur. Thanks in advance.

Slight re-diagnosis: in fact I think the screen isn't auto-adjusting as ambient light changes. When I close the macbook then re-open it, the screen brightness reverts to mid-brightness, even though it was full brightness before. My old mid-2010 macbook pro with OSX Sierra did not do this.

So now when I open the macbook, it's: 1) Open the macbook; 2) Press the touch bar; 3) Adjust the light level.

Not very user friendly. Can I do something to change this?
