import itunes library to apple music

Hello,

I am using Mac OS Catalina 10.15.7 on a Macbook Pro 2019.

I followed these instructions to try to move my itunes library to an external hard drive:

https://www.imore.com/how-move-your-itunes-library-external-hard-drive

I have found this article but it hasn't helped me figure out my problem:

https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-10831

I made it to step 3 on the first article: 1) I consolidated my library 2) moved my old itunes library to a new drive3) I launched music using option and selected the library on the external drive, when prompted to save I saved the library on my local hard drive (Music > Music >Music Library), I opened the music app and there was no music inside.

I made sure that under Music > Preferences > Files that the Music Media folder is pointing to the hard drive itunes media (/<external drive>/iTunes/iTunes Media).

I realized my library is in the old format (i.e. iTunes > iTunes Media > etc...) as opposed to the music format.

Best,

Hello, akriza.

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

From your post, it's understood that you're having some troubles with your music library and the Apple Music app. We'd be glad to help out.

Check out the steps in this article which may help: Change where your music files are stored on Mac - Apple Support

"Add files to your library but not to your Music folder

When you add an item already on your computer to your library, Music places a copy of the file in your Music folder. The original file remains in its current location.

You can change this setting so that files are added to your library without being added to the Music folder. You might want to do this, for example, if you prefer to store files on an external disk but still want to view them in Music.

  1. In the Music app  on your Mac, choose Music > Preferences, then click Files.
  2. Deselect the checkbox next to “Copy files to Music Media folder when adding to library.”

From now on, when you drag a file to your library, the item appears in Music, but the actual file isn’t copied or moved.

Tip: You can temporarily reverse this setting by holding down the Option key while you drag files to the Music window."

Once you open Apple Music, it should upgrade the library: What happened to iTunes? - Apple Support

"Upgrade your iTunes library

After you update to macOS Catalina, just open the Apple Music app or Apple TV app to use your iTunes library in the new apps. Have multiple iTunes libraries? Learn how to switch between them in macOS Catalina."

If this still doesn't work, let us know and we'll go from there.

Cheers!
