"Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the Internet." Need some help

I only use ethernet for my internet on my iMac. Randomly today I wasn't connected to the internet. In network settings, it says ""Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the Internet." Any ideas what this could be?

I had turn on my firewall and thought maybe this was it, but I did that two days ago and ethernet worked fine until today. Turning off the firewall and restarting the computer I still have the same ethernet message.

My location is set to "automatic".

I've been having weird stuff like this happen (which is why I turned on the firewall).

Could this be some kind of hack or malware or just something else random? Appreciate any help.

Hello zb223,

Thanks for your post in Apple Support Communities. We understand you receive a message regarding your ethernet connection on your iMac about it being self-assigned.

When you go to System Preferences > Network, what do you have selected for 'Configure IPv4'? What shows for your IP address?

Do you have any other devices connected to your router or cable modem? If so, are they able to access the internet without issue? Do you have any software installed on your iMac for a VPN connection or virus scanning?

You may need to renew your DHCP lease under System Preferences > Network > Advanced. We look forward to hearing how it goes.
