no wifi icon in status bar
brand new phone with nothing installed. settings says wifi is connected and internet works but the wifi icon doesn't display.

Hello alect,
Thank you for posting on Apple Communities. If your iPhone is connected to a WI-FI network but you are not seeing the WI-FI icon on the top right it could be unexpected behavior. I would recommend restarting your device first. Then try checking this article in case of any connectivity issues. If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won't connect to a WI-FI Network.
