Why can’t be I download gif files on any of my devices? It’s doesn’t seem to be related to specific browsers, or sources. There’s something else going on. I’ve tried in my iPad, iPhone, and My iMac, and they’ve all yielded the same result. The gifs download as still images.

Animated GIFs (or PNGs) will download and appear in the Finder as non-animated images. You can click on the image, and then press the spacebar to use Quick Look to see the image animation or open that image in your browser of choice for the animation to play.

You can open a new Finder Window at the GIF location, press ⌘+4 to switch to Gallery view. When you select the animated GIF/PNG in this view, it will also play the animation.
