Podcast App global reset

The Mac OS Big Sur 11.3 update reset all the Podcasts app to show all episodes as "Not Played".... now I have 100s of old episodes piled up for each show. Who's bright idea was that?

I know I can change the view to "newest on top" but I don't listen to each show each day and having the view as "oldest on top" works best for me... until SMAPPLE decided to eff it all up.

Thanks a bunch big brother.

SCADA-Guy,

Can you tell us which tab you’re seeing all the unplayed episodes in? On your iPad that might be in each show, in the Library > Latest Episodes, under Downloads or possibly under Listen Now > Up Next.

Since they are syncing with your iMac, are they showing in the same place on your iMac?

On your iMac, are you able to go into a show, choose to see all episodes, then click on the first one that should be played, hold the Shift key and click on the last one, then secondary/right-click and mark them as played? If so, does that then sync to your iPad as well?

We’re eager to hear more on all of this.

Hi SCADA-Guy,

We understand that in the Podcasts app, all shows are showing all episodes as not played. Additionally, when viewing all the episodes, they are sorted as “Oldest On Top” and you’re seeing all the episodes.

Do you use any other devices with the Podcasts app, such as a iPhone, iPad or iPod? If so, are you seeing the same thing there? Do you use Time Machine to back up your Mac? We ask as we may be able to restore your history from there.

Thanks.

I use my iPad for podcasts as well. I see the same problem on the iPad now... it is setup to sync with my iMac Pro so I am not surprised that the Podcast app shows everything the same way as on the iMac Pro.

I use Time Machine to backup my iMac Pro but I'm unclear on how reverting to a backup will correct the settings of individual podcast episodes.

Yes, another one bits the bites, the cache is completely refreshing. All the timestamps for every entry are today's date.

If restoring the library podcast directory is all that's required then that seems simple enough, but I am not so sure.

Was the update to the OS/podcast application the reason for the complete refresh of the podcast user library? The only reason for this would be a file format change that is incompatible with the latest release, at least that's all I can come up with.

On my iPad Pro, I was seeing unplayed episodes in each show to which I subscribe.

Same on my iMac Pro.

Yesterday, I sync'd the iPad with the iMac by cable connection, and seem to have got the iPad to show the same content as the iMac now.

I was initially unable to "select all" and set the "played" status, but today that is working as well. All is well, for now...

For future reference, Apple should consider including the ramifications of installing updates as well as the bug fixes.

That way, I can decide whether the update is going to be sufficiently beneficial to justify installation.
