Safari cannot load web page because "a problem repeatedly occurred"

Since a recent update which I allowed in on 25 April 2021, my Safari has moved the items on my favourites bar and added in some old ones, but more worryingly is failing to load some websites - this one seems to work! I cannot access my bank, zoom and some other sites.

Tried a reboot, no difference. Tried clicking on "Reload Web Page", but the page stays for a second then I'm back to a black screen. If I leave it alone for a minute, the computer seems to repeatedly try to load the page on its own - and repeatedly fails.

Is there a fix? If not, how do I revert to the previous Safari? Using Mojave 10.14.6 on 2018 MacBook pro.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.14

Spoke to Applecare. TLDR: Next thing to try is to reinstall Catalina 🤬

Things they had me try, with no success:

  • Prevented start up programs
  • Disabled Safari extensions (were already disabled)
  • Cleared cache / website data
  • Restarted Mac in safe mode
  • Created a test user, logged in as new user, new user had the same issue

The said it was not a current reported / known issue, so next step was to either revert to a backup or reinstall Catalina.

I haven't got time or inclination to do that today!

I since tried the Safari technology preview, and it does not have this issue for me, though of course it is beta software so if you want to use it, buyer beware!

This seems to be similar to issues others are having after the Safari 14.1 update 4/27/2021 that was part of the Catalina 10.15.7 update and it relates to JavaScript.

Test the following:

Turn off “Enable Javascript” in Safari: Preferences: Security

See if this resolves the the issue loading pages

This is not a solution since pages are only partially complete and lacks any Javascript functionality.

I am still searching for a fix.

Bottom Line: At this point this is most likely an Apple bug/issue related to 14.1 and they need to offer a fix other than an OSX reinstall.

Same here, after updating to Catalina and Safari latest security updates on an Intel 16" MacBook Pro.

Happening on many sites. Have cleared all stored website date / cleared cache. Disabled all extensions.

I initially see "This web page was reloaded because a problem occurred"

Then shortly afterwards the site just stops loading with a message "A problem repeatedly occurred":

Looked in JavaScript console, could see some cross site errors so disabled cross origin restrictions via Develop menu but made no difference.

Really don't want to reinstall Catalina (can't upgrade to Big Sur for various reasons).
