WatchOS 7.4 can't be updated on Watch Series 3

I'm having issues with the WatchOS 7.4 update. Only 609 MB, it requires 3 GB to install. I managed to get free space to 2.5 GB, but then followed this and the result was a lot of time wasted and only 1.8 GB spare, so I still can't do the update, and I have to go through the whole unpairing process again to restore from the backup that's alleged to be on my phone..

Is there a better way here? My Mac has loads of free space and is on the local Wi-Fi, why can't the update be managed with access to that spare space, or some of my 50 GB iCloud allocation?

Unpair you watch from your iPhone then pair it back.

And the answer is ... (drum roll) ... ignore 4.7 and move straight to 4.7.1.

Would be nice to get an Apple moderator on these forums who can say "hey yeah there's a problem, we've looked at it and there's a fix coming". But no, they let 2000+ people scream at the moon and then slip out an update with 'performance updates'.

Done that (and in fact the procedure for that is in the hyperlink), didn't work. See also a growing number of posts on the same topic, people repeatedly unpairing and pairing and nothing working.

You are absolutely correct. Tired of people saying unpair and par again and it works.... it does not it is still a 3GB download that does not fit on watch!

What do you mean? When does the next update occur? I think that the 3 is a flawed product with lots of glitches. They want us to buy a new version.

I really want the new updates but I don't want to unpair because I don't have enough space in iCloud to back up

The real issue is that the Series 3 is supposed to have 8GB of internal memory. Mine only has 4.2GB, so after I install an app or two I’m out of memory for any updates. This is what is going on with your watch too. I’m tired of restarting and upairing. Apple needs to replace my watch with one that has 8GB!
