Hey,

Follow these steps:

  • Check available storage. Click on the Apple icon in the top-left of your Mac, and click on About this Mac. Click on Storage and check how much is available. You need at least 35.5GB to upgrade to macOS Big Sur. If there's less storage, then click on Manage and clear the Bin. You can also check the other options and large files to remove. Once you have the required space, go to https://apps.apple.com/in/app/macos-big-sur/id1526878132?mt=12 and get the update.
  • To upgrade from OS X Mountain Lion, first upgrade to OS X El Capitan, then upgrade to macOS Big Sur.
  • If you are unable to download the update, then check your Internet connection. If it's slow, then start downloading and leave it overnight.
  • If you are having trouble installing, make sure that your Mac is plugged in and before starting the install, close all open Apps except Finder.

If you are facing any other issue, please elaborate on it and post what your Mac says here.

Prerequisites:

Back up your computer to avoid losing data in case of an error while installing

Plug in your MacBook using its AC power adapter. ( The one that came with your MacBook Air )

Update to MacOS El Capitan 11.6 if you're using Mountain Lion

Have at least 36GB of free space.

The update from 11.2.3 to 11.3( latest ) is about 6.63 GB in size. Generally, having 10 - 15 GB of Empty Space at all times is considered good practice especially for this latest update.

Now - suggestion if having issues downloading the 11.3 Big Sur. Shutdown computer and disconnect all external drives. If possible connect via Ethernet Cable to Router. If via Wifi - disconnect ALL Other devices using the Wifi - we want the maximum bandwidth only for this computer. Plug into charger and move as close the Router as possible. Restart in Safe Mode >>SHIFT << immediately at startup. It does a repair disk, clears cache files and only loads Apple Software and Fonts. It will load slowly - Normal. Once logged in - ti will look and perform differently - also normal. Open the Apple Apps Store and find the Big Sur and download it. This will be a full installer - have found this method works better than System Updates method. Download and run the Installer.
