if i upgrade my memory to the max 8gb on an early 2009 imac using el captain on internal HD and have a 1tb external HD empty could i install a new OS on that Drive the external one
RAM only affects the ability of the machine to multitask faster.
A 2009 iMac can at most install El Capitan on either internal or external drive.
You can get an external SSD in a Firewire case such as this one for the best speed on your computer:
