they are free if you are on wifi and you msg another apple users

if you msg another non apple user its send as a sms and the cost depend on your carrier

if you're not on wifi it cost the amount of data it the msg take up if it's to another apple user,

if you msg another non apple user its send as a sms and the cost depend on your carrier

apple don't charge you anything
