MacOS BigSur 11.3 restarts after sleeping

Hello everyone,

My MacBook keeps restarting after closing the lid (sleep mode). Anyone experiencing the same problem?

Here is some detailed info:

Same problem here. Macbook Pro 15" 2017 model. Kernal panic "hibernate_lookup_paddr" started happening after upgrade to Big Sur 11.3. Tried Safe Mode, makes no difference. Tried detaching all peripherals before hibernating: no difference.

Clearly this is an issue that Apple needs to (hot)fix in Big Sur. The problems appears only to people having Macbook Pro 2017 models so maybe some issue with specific memory models.

For now I will diable hibernation:

sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0

Hi timbatec,

It seems you're having trouble with your Mac restarting unexpectedly and we can help.

Try disconnecting any attached peripherals, and testing in safe mode:

How to use safe mode on your Mac

Does your Mac wake from sleep correctly in safe mode?

If it does, one of the loaded kernel extensions or installed apps is likely causing an issue.

Let us know what happens and we can help.

I and others have the problem too. However, only when the Macbook hibernates overnight, not just for a few hours during the day.

It seems to be hardware related: Almost everyone who reported this issue owns a Macbook 2015 15 (MacBookPro14,3).

See here as well:

I'll try safe mode over night.

I put the MacBook in safe mode last night, closed the lid and this morning I had no kernel panic.

Could one of you try this and see if this is the same for you?

I'm not sure if it's the installed applications or if the safe mode changes the behavior of the sleep mode. One affected user reported that he has only one VPN client installed and if it has such effects....?

I have another application that uses a kernel extension. I will install it now and see what happens.

@kareng12 - since you suggested the safe mode test, and you know this forum well, do you have some additional info on sleep mode and safe mode?

What could be the next steps?

So, after seeing two panics over two nights after discovering the issue, last night after installing 11.3.1 I left it overnight the same way as before (unplugged, no external devices, no custom hibernation settings) and this morning it woke normally. Completely unscientific, of course, so I hope someone else can confirm similar observations.
