The iPhone 12 needs a SIM card or an eSIM. However, the SIM card does not store any data, so it does not get involved in the transfer. Here are options for transferring from one phone to another→Transfer data from your previous iOS device to your new iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support. There are ways that don’t require a computer.
