Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!


It sounds like you are trying to share audio between AirPods and your MacBook Pro computer.


This sharing feature only works with iPhones: Share audio with AirPods or Beats headphones


On a Mac, you and a friend would have to share one pair of AirPods.


Or, you could try to use the Audio MIDI Setup in the Utilities subfolder of Applications to create a multi-output device.


Set up audio devices in Audio MIDI Setup on Mac - Audio MIDI Setup User Guide
