exclamation mark on my message icon

I have a red exclamation mark on my message icon. Why is it there and how do I remove it?

That is there because there was a problem sending a message. Check and make sure that your recent messages didn't fail to send.

I deleted all my messages and the mark still appears on the icon. What do you recommend
