Can iPod mini be default speaker for Apple TV?

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you'd like to use your HomePod mini with your Apple TV and use it as a default speaker. If so, we'd like to share some information with you.

You can use your HomePod mini to stream audio from your Apple TV. However, it must be an Apple TV 4K model. Please check out the following resource here:

It reads "HomePod mini does not support home theater surround sound, but you can stream audio from Apple TV to HomePod mini or a HomePod mini stereo pair using AirPlay."

It appears that you can only use a regular HomePod for Default Audio Output. The following resources explain why:
