Music played from Apple Watch to AirPods Pro cuts out after a couple seconds

When I listen to music on my AirPod Pros from my Apple Watch (series6) the music stops streaming after a couple seconds of play. The visual indicator on the watch looks likes it's still playing but no sound is coming through the AirPods. This is the same for streamed "listen now" music as well as music residing on the watch, that had been previously transferred.

I can stream music from my watch to my Bose headphones, just not my AirPod Pros.
