Subtitles disappear in fullscreen

I always have the problem that subtitles disappear as soon as I open the video in fullscreen mode. The video-settings-button, if present, also disappears as soon as I open fullscreen mode.

I tried enabling these options, but it did not change anything: https://support.apple.com/de-de/guide/iphone/iph3e2e23d1/ios

Is there any way to fix this issue?

Deno1003,

Thanks for confirming. That was all helpful with isolating the problem. If the issue was happening in the iPhone 5, it may have been a file that was transferred over from data restored using iTunes or iCloud. If that's the case, you may want to make a new backup of your device, then Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings.

Once the restore is complete, don’t restore from the recent backup right away. Test the iPhone before restoring. Check to make sure the issue is not present.

If it is not, restore the information and test once more. If you restore and the issue continues, that tells us the problem is specific to file(s) being restored. If it happens without restoring data, you'll want to Contact Apple for support and service.

Best wishes.

Deno1003,

Thanks for returning to the Apple Support Communities with this information. We can try to help also with your iPhone 8 Plus issue. Is your iPhone on the current iOS software, iOS 14.5.1? If not, make a backup of the device and update the software. Here's information on how to backup and update:

If the software is up-to-date, you may want to Restart your iPhone if you haven't already. This simple step will often refresh the apps and software on the device to solve numerous problems you may encounter.

We hope these steps help you out.

Cheers!

Hey there, Deno1003!

Welcome to Apple Support Communities! If we understand correctly, you are running into issues with subtitles when your video is in full-screen mode. We can understand your concerns. We will do all we can to help get you pointed in the right direction. To verify, what type of Mac are you using? What version of the macOS is currently on the Mac? Here's how to Find out which macOS your Mac is using.

Does the problem happen when you're watching videos in a specific app or when watching videos on Safari? Have you tried powering off and restarting the Mac to see if this helps to correct the problem? Does the issue happen with a specific user? If you do not have an alternate user, you may need to create one to test with. Here's more information on how to Set up users, guests and groups on Mac.

Once more information is posted, others in the Apple Support Communities may be able to offer assistance and answers.

Take care!

Deno1003,

Thanks for verifying that your iPhone is up-to-date. You say that this problem is ongoing. Did you own an iPhone before you purchased/moved to the iPhone 8? If so, was this issue present on the previous iPhone? You said the problem happens in Safari and other browsers. Which other browser types do you use? What website are you visiting when this obstacle occurs? If you open the Apple TV or Video app, do you have the same problem here, with a built-in app meant for videos?

Once more specifics about the issue are posted, others in the Apple Support Communities may be able to assist.

Kind regards.

Yes I had an iPhone 5 before I moved to my iPhone 8 Plus but I don’t remember whether that issue was present on that device as well.

I tried all kinds of browsers: Safari, Chrome, Firefox Klar, Firefox.

Youtube for example but it also happens on other video/streaming sites.

It seems the subtitles work fine in the Video apps.

So the issue only occurs in browser apps.

Kind regards.

Hey,

the IPhone is currently up-to-date. I also tried restarting, but it did not change anything.

I should probably mention that this issue exists for me since I bought this iPhone a few years ago. So it’s not some new bug or anything it just never worked.

It really started to annoy me a few days ago when I had to watch quite a few videos with subtitles so I decided to ask if there is a fix for it.
