Somehow I either deleted the icon, or something else happened to my phone (aliens? I doubt it, but... it's ).
Because my contacts still exist in the Phone app, I can't download a new Contacts app.
Is there some other way of recovering the Contacts app?

Check better in all your screen pages. The icon could have been accidentally moved to a different page, or "hidden" into a folder.
