ipod red x on screen

My beloved IPOD classic that has all my audiobooks stored on it has a red X on the screen. Even with the reboot I either get that or the apple image. Of course, I can't read the serial number on the back (it's too scratched). Is there even a fix to this or worth pursuing?

Probably a failed hard disk, maybe a bad battery (does it hold a charge?), or maybe a loose or bad cable.

If you're inclined, replacement hard disks (look for iPod Classic 80 GB Hard Drive or similar) are seemingly still available. The repair is considered to be very difficult however, per one source of disassembly and repair information.

Whether it is "worth pursuing" is your decision.
