Pulling photos off iCloud

My father passed recently, and my siblings and I are wanting to each keep a copy of the photos he had on his iPhone.

Since they are all on his iCloud, someone suggested we each create a new Photos library on our computers, temporarily make it the System library, log into his iCloud, and sync....

However, I'm concerned that this will just delete all the photos from his account, since Apple's language makes me think that the cloud syncs FROM devices, and not TO, and these System libraries will be completely blank.

Yes, we could just download the photos from his cloud, but that loses the orginal date the photos were taken, as well as any "moments" groupings....

Is there a way to get a copy of these photos for each of us, preserving that data, w/o having the phone present? (We all live in different states, and would, ideally, like to not mail the phone around)

Thanks!

I Recommend Contacting Apple Support:

For assistance with an Apple Account, contact Apple Support. This seems to be an issue with account accessibility (you needing permissions to access his data. If you could transfer this device and his items to your own account, then things would seem to be just fine. You might need his death certificate to get this transferred to your account. Apple will know all about re-associating accounts, and will run you through the fix.

Contacting Apple Support:

Why the Wait:

Phone calls are taking a bit to go through at the moment, due do lots of calls. With the Coronavirus Pandemic, many are at home at the moment, with much time on their hands to contact Apple. So, just stay on the line, and you will get through :)

Sorry for your loss.

Thanks.

We have that as a last ditch effort, but we're hoping to keep the original date/time data attached to the photos. He did a lot of traveling, so now, w/ some, our only reference point for some of them might be "Sept of 17 he was in Portugal" or some such thing like that.

Downloading using that method marks all the photos as the date of download, and all organization gets jumbled by which files came in first....

Retrieving this Info:

Once you've accessed these photos, transfer them to a computer. You would.... Right-Click the photo, and select "Get Info".

Right, but by downloading them onto the computer, we'd be creating copies, aka new files, so the date created/modified would be today.... which we're trying to avoid. Photos/iCloud seems to be able to preserve that metadata...

So I guess perhaps the better way to phrase our question is...

If I create a brand new, completely BLANK Photos library on my MacBook, make it the System Photo Library, and then, under preferences, click the box next to the iCloud Photos that reads "automatically upload and store all your photos and videos in iCloud, so you can access them from any of your devices and on the web"...

Then log into my father's iCloud account, will his photos fill into that library, OR, since it is entirely blank, will it delete all the photos out of his cloud? That's what I'm most afraid of, since it sounds like iCloud will match what's on the Mac, not the Mac matching w/ what's on the cloud

Two things to Point Out:

A. Accessing these Between Accounts:

Nothing would be accessible by you, as Apple Accounts cannot be merged as of this reply. What is in his iCloud Account is in his iCloud Account. You cannot access it from your own iCloud Account.

and...

B. Compress these to Avoid Modifications:

Do you have access to his devices? If so, save all the photos to the computer, right-click it, and then choose to compress them. They would be as one file. The photos' data would not be affected.

Thanks.

I guess I'm just not explaining what I'm trying to do in the correct way....

We have his iPhone, and login info to his iCloud. Therefore, going to iCloud.com, we can see the photos that are synced from his iPhone. What we're hoping to do, then, is on each of our Macbooks, create a new library in our Photos app, separate from our own photo libraries and Apple IDs.

Then, log into using his ID, and transfer/sync his online iCloud.com photos (which are synced on his iPhone) to this new Photos Library on our computer(s). Then we can log out and go about our business. Due to the way the Photos app on the computer contains things, that should give each of us a copy of his photos, with their original date/time stamp, and "moments" organization.

It seems that downloading them in any other way creates copies/new files on the date they are downloaded, so compressing them after the fact only preserves the download date (since they are new files, not orginals) and not the date that they were originally shot.....

(I do really appreciate all the suggestions, I hope I'm not coming off as rude! I don't mean to be!)

As you wrote -

Is there a way to get a copy of these photos for each of us, preserving that data, w/o having the phone present? (We all live in different states, and would .

iCloud sharing between iPhone / Mac will work when they are signed in with same Apple ID and password on the same network , you and your relatives live in different states , of course the internet services providers might be same but they are protected for an individual person / some have different internet service provider .

So photo sharing with iCloud is not possible .

So , the possible way is bring all the devices on the same network Transfer photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Photos are not synced by date on other devices .
