Very urgent: Can’t separate two phone numbers from one contact.

My daughter is missing and I am trying to contact her with several different phone numbers I have for her (some use other services that didn’t require her to use her phone) but my iPhone is combining them and sending the message to only one. I don’t even know which one.

I tried creating a new contact with one of the phone numbers and deleting it from the first. The phone retained the info and is still combining the contacts.

So I deleted the new one and set up another, typing the phone number in rather than cutting and pasting and it’s still combining them.

I need to be able to text every number for her. I stupidly put her boyfriend’s number with hers and now I can’t text them separately.

I’m using an iPhone 8 with version 14.4.2.

Please help me!

Hello maybedog,

Thanks for reaching out again using Apple Support Communities!

We can understand the importance of texting the right contact; thanks for those additional details.

Since the contact we already added to a conversation, we suggest saving data needs from the conversations and deleting that message thread, then starting a new thread to resolve the issue.

Once your contacts have the correct numbers assigned to them, the issue should be resolved with any new threads you create.

You can do this by deleting the problematic threads, then going to Messages > tapping Create New Message, and then entering the correct contacts.

If you continue to experience any issues, please reach out to an Apple Support advisor for further assistance: Contact - Official Apple Support

We want to ensure the issue is quickly resolved so you can reach out to these contacts without issue.

Cheers!

Hello maybedog,

Thanks for reaching out using Apple Support Communities!

We know it's important to stay connected so you can contact her; we're happy to assist you.

You should be able to edit each individual contact with these steps Edit contacts on iPhone

Once you had the new contacts made, you could create a new text message thread to ensure you are not using the old numbers.

These steps should help you get connected to the right numbers to resolve the issue.

Cheers!

I just read that entire page and as I explained above, that’s exactly what I did. I pulled two numbers out and made them new contacts but I do not have the option to create a new thread. If I select “send message” or click on the message link in either of the new contacts or the existing contact it takes me back to the joint thread. The joint thread doesn’t show as being from different users either. At the top, it only shows one user, the original contact.

The phone is not allowing me to message any contact that was ever part of the original contact.

im sure you have iPhones lying around for testing. Do this and see what happens: create a contact with two separate numbers. Text someone and have a short text conversation with them. Now take one of the numbers in the contact out and make a new contact with that number. Now try to create a text from that number. Does it show a new thread or does it show the existing thread? What about if you go to the other number?
