You have No Coverage:

You have a various number of days to purchase AppleCare protection with it (30 days, 90 days, or 1 year). The max is 1 year. So, if you never made the purchase, then coverage is expired an over with, regardless of where it was purchased.

The warranty expired. You could not check the status until the device was activated. Unfortunately for you, it was originally sold more than one year prior to activating it.

The warranty is based on the original date of sale, not the activation date.

If you buy a car with a 3 year warranty, and don't drive it at all for 4 years, then have a problem when you start it up for the first time, it will NOT be covered by the warranty. The warranty expired.
