Is there a reliable alternative to 2FA for iphone11? Google Authenticator seems to do a good job of advertising itself, but I am wary of google at the best of times.

You can set up 2fa to use multiple trusted devices, multiple phone numbers, etc.

There is no 3rd party 'authenticator' that can be used for Apple ID 2FA.
