An AT&T rep just told me that "visual voicemail is out nationwide."

All iPhone users in the US have lost voicemail? For a week? Really? Wouldn't this be headlining the Apple news sites?

Mine's been down for about a week.

I have had visual voicemail access over the last week - the last visual voicemail I have available on my iPhone was downloaded last Wednesday.

Have you tried calling your number to access your voicemail the old fashioned way to confirm if there are any voicemail messages available on AT&T's server that haven't been downloaded to your iPhone as a visual voicemail?

In the other voicemail thread here
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2515835&tstart=0

I posted about what AT&T told me. They said it has been a "known issue" since July 20th. I told them I was rather incensed that there had been no notification to their iPhone users, and they said they "couldn't do that" because "it only affects some people." Personally, as I'm job-hunting, I would have appreciated notification even if it didn't apply to me. As it was, when I accessed my VMs through holding the "1" key, I had 10 messages stretching back to Monday.

They also said there was no estimate on resolution.

I attempted one of the solutions suggested in the other thread, going to "reset all settings." Now when I press the voicemail icon, it dials the VM system instead of going to visual voice mail at all.

I'm livid.

Another data point: a friend with a 3G (not 3GS) lost voicemail as part of his iOS4 upgrade (plus all the other 3G-related issues). An Apple genius wiped his iPhone and gave him a new SIM card (?), and everything was back to normal.

Resetting my network settings (recommended by an Apple tech) and restoring did nothing for me. Wonder what the SIM card issue was?

I have not been getting voicemail notification since July 29th. I have spent about 6 hours on the phone with Apple/AT&T and no one can resolve my issue. The only way to get the voicemail to work is to go back to the original factory settings without any of my contacts, e-mail accounts. I use this phone for business and clients had been leaving me messages and I had no idea. Talk about embarrassing. I still do not have a solution from AT&T and I have wasted my whole day.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Although contacts are included with your iPhone's backup, contacts are designed to be synced with a supported address book application on your computer. Not a good idea to depend on your iPhone's backup which stores a significant amount of other data, or on your iPhone alone for this which can be lost or stolen.

How many email accounts? Email accounts can be manually created or the email account settings can be transferred from the email client used on your computer for accessing the accounts to your iPhone via the iTunes sync/transfer process.

Since visual voicemail works after restoring your iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup, BINGO!

So how are transferring the two e-mail addresses I have and my contacts back into my phone affecting the visual voicemail? I have tried transferring these only, no apps, movies, photos, etc. and then the voicemail will not work. I think it's related to the last software update. But when I restore the factory settings to original it version (4.0.1) is the same as the backup version when the voicemail does not work.

When you restored your iPhone with iTunes from your iPhone's backup, you restored much more than contacts and email account settings with the backup. There is much more data included with your iPhone's backup than contacts and email account settings.

Didn't you say the problem is resolved when restoring your iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup? If so, this is what you need to do since apparently there is a problem with your iPhone's backup in this regard.

The firmware is not included with the backup. When restoring an iPhone with iTunes, the iPhone is completely erased first followed by the firmware being re-installed. After the firmware is re-installed, there are two options. Restore from your iPhone's backup which is the default selection, or as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup which must be manually selected. If there is a problem with your iPhone's backup, if you restore from the backup you will also restore the problem. If the problem is resolved when restoring with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup, this is what you need to do if you want access to visual voicemail and be notified when a new voicemail message is received.
