Unable to to save excel xlsx or xls format as pdf format

When I save a file with excel .xlsx or .xlx format to a .pdf format the resulting document is physically about twice the size as the original file. A 2 page document with 4 columns per page now is 6 pages with 2 columns per page.

My system is running macOS Big Sur, version 11.2.3 and app Microsoft Excel for Mac, version 16.49 (21050201).

Any help will be appreciated.

I continued to search for a solution on the internet and I found the problem being discussed in the Adobe Support Community. On Sept 25, 2019 a member named DustyPaws shared the following fix: "In Excel go to Page Setup, in the Page tab select Fit to: 1 by 1"

The fix works - the Save As file is back to normal size.

Thanks, TNNoah

It started happening in early 2020. I have a membership roster that is corrected on a regular basis as the information changes. Files prior to Jan 2020 were corrected in excel .xls and then saved as .pdf file. When I corrected the same file in Jan 2020 and saved as a .pdf file the problem started. I have not tried to correct the problem until now since I do not use this technique often.

Per your suggestion I did clear the Print Area before saving as. Did not correct the problem.
