On a Mac, is there a way to create spaces only using the keyboard?
I am curious if this is possible

"Spaces" is a feature of Mission Control, a clone of the iPad/iPhone Interface. It's all about the pointing device.
I doubt you can create a new Space (or do much of anything to manipulate Spaces) without using a pointing device.

How about the space bar? Or do you mean something else?
Maybe this will help:
Use keyboard shortcuts. If you don't like using the
trackpad, you can cycle left and right through your open spaces by
pressing CTRL+LEFT ARROW or CTRL+RIGHT ARROW.
This shortcut also can be used to go to each space individually. To do so, press CTRL and the number of your desired space, e.g. CTRL+2 to go to the second space.
He probably means screen spaces/desktops.
